European Innovation Council managers could hand-pick projects in the next Framework Programme

The European Commission is testing new ways to speed up access to funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC), with programme managers set to gain more freedom and responsibility for fast-tracking promising projects from research groups and start-ups.
“We would like to move towards this approach where programme managers can look around and identify where the opportunities are coming out, where the potential innovations are,” Keith Sequeira, head of unit for the EIC in the European Commission’s research and innovation directorate-general, said at a conference of the European Association of Innovation Consultants in Brussels in December.
Sequeira said EIC programme managers, who are tasked with selecting and managing projects and portfolios, will have the freedom to invite some projects to submit a proposal that can be assessed immediately and does not need to go through the usual EIC…
