WIPO patent data reveals future industrial applications of AI
Patent families related to AI application fields emerged in the 1990s, with transportation and telecommunications overtaking all other field

An analysis by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) shows many sectors and industries are exploring the commercial exploitation of artificial intelligence. In addition to specific techniques and applications, the WIPO analysis identified 20 application fields that were mentioned in 62 per cent of all its AI patents.  

In all, 209,910 AI patents refer to one or several application fields. The top two applications fields mentioned in AI patents are telecommunications and transportation, with more than 50,000 filings each, followed by life and medical sciences, and personal devices, computing and human– computer interaction. Together, these four application fields are mentioned in 42 percent of all AI patent documents.
