On Monday the 24th of July the University of Bergen hosted a meeting with representatives from various Indonesian marine research organizations and the American philanthropic organization OceanX. The aim of the meeting was to explore opportunities for collaboration in marine research and education.
The Indonesian authorities and OceanX have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with OceanX, collaboration which will see the OceanXplorer, the most advanced research and media vessel in the world, cruising from Norway to Indonesian waters in the up-coming months. UiB's researchers are set to embark on the OceanXplorer Sunday the 30th of July, conducting six research projects in Norwegian waters.
The meeting was led by UiB's Vice-Rector Prof. Gottfried Greve, Marine Dean Prof. Øyvind Fiksen, and Mr. Andrea Magugliani, coordinator for external relations of the marine strategic area. The Indonesian delegation included representatives from The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (CMMAI), The Hydro Oceanographic Center of the Indonesian NAVY (PUSHIDROSAL), The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), The Ministry/National Planning Agency (BAPPENAS), The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Geology -MEMR), and The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The primary purpose of the meeting was to explore collaboration possibilities between UiB and Indonesian authorities in marine research and education. Both parties are enthusiastic about the potential for joint efforts in addressing marine challenges. By sharing knowledge and resources, we aim to enhance scientific understanding and sustainable marine management.
"Collaborating with Indonesia in marine research holds tremendous potential. By joining forces, we can advance scientific understanding and work towards sustainable marine management" said Prof. Øyvind Fiksen.
