This agreement will simplify and accelerate the steps to be taken by TransMedTech researchers by harmonizing the project selection processes of the two organizations.

The TransMedTech Institute, taking the form of a living lab, supports the fast-tracked development and deployment of next-generation medical technology solutions in healthcare settings for treatment of cancers, cardiovascular illnesses and musculoskeletal disorders. TransMedTech originated with an initiative led by Polytechnique Montréal in collaboration with four founding institutions (CHU Sainte-Justine, Université de Montréal, CHUM and the Jewish General Hospital) and about thirty other partners.

For its part, MEDTEQ’s mission is to accelerate the development of innovative technological solutions to improve patients’ health and quality of life, to support their validation and integration in the healthcare system and to maximize their impact, both locally and globally, by bringing together the complementary skills of industrial and academic partners, and those of healthcare providers. Polytechnique Montréal is an academic member of this consortium.

This agreement allows MEDTEQ’s Scientific Committee to evaluate joint projects (eligible for both TransMedTech and MEDTEQ funding), as well as projects eligible for TransMedTech funding only. This committee is composed of industrial and academic members of the consortium as well as external experts, recruited on a case-by-case basis for their expertise in the specific field of the project to be evaluated.

Complementary Strengths for Innovation

The agreement also confirms the implementation of a project co-financing system, TransMedTech and MEDTEQ having developed complementary skills in this field. Their alliance will allow collaborative research and innovation projects eligible for funding from both organizations to be funded first by TransMedTech, and then to access MEDTEQ funding once they have reached a sufficient level of technological maturity.

Furthermore, TransMedTech and MEDTEQ are joining forces to co-manage collaborative research and innovation projects eligible for funding from both organizations. This co-management is made possible by the sharing of expertise, infrastructure and human resources, which the agreement also provides for. Thanks to the agreement, Ms. Djazia Liamini was hired a few weeks ago to manage joint R&D projects.

"Our combined skills and expertise will undoubtedly create a value chain, as well as bridges to industry and enable medical technology R&D projects that will have a real impact on society to be implemented more quickly and easily,” says Pr. Carl-Éric Aubin, Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal and Executive and Scientific Director of the TransMedTech Institute.

"The complementarity of TransMedTech’s research skills, and MEDTEQ's expertise in establishing the industrial sector in medical technology innovation projects and commercialization, is certainly a winning formula for research teams, industrial partners, healthcare centres and ultimately the patient”, emphasizes Diane Côté, President and CEO of MEDTEQ.To learn more
