From safeguarding rivers to restoring oceans, the European Union has steadily deepened its commitment to water resilience, culminating this May in a strong call by MEPs for a bold Water Resilience Strategy that would secure the continent’s most vital resource for future generations.
The first EU fund dedicated to fisheries was launched in 1993. Now known as the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund, it has a budget of over €6 billion for 2021-27.
In 2000, the EU adopted the Water Framework Directive to protect and enhance the quality of water resources, setting the objective of all water bodies reaching "good” status. Later, in 2021, the EU adopted Mission Starfish 2030 as one of the five Horizon Europe Missions, with actions to advance the regeneration of seas, and coastal and inland waters.
