European Commission report highlights the challenges of evaluating the maturity of EU research and innovation projects

Technology readiness levels (TRLs) are a valuable tool for tracking funding in the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, but more guidance is needed for project officers to make accurate assessments, says a report recently published by the European Commission’s directorate general for research and innovation.
Project officers generally consider TRL to be a good measure of technological advancement, according to the report. However, they face challenges in verifying TRL levels due to “limited resources, tools and expertise.”
The nine-point TRL scale, first developed by NASA in the 1970s, provides a standardised framework for assessing the maturity of technologies.
