Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation is looking to fund international collaboration in ocean science

Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation last week opened a call aimed at supporting ambitious ocean research that might struggle to get funding elsewhere.
The foundation’s Ocean Shot call is looking to fund several three-year projects with up to $3 million each in two focus areas: discovering new species, ecosystems or their ecological functions; and developing new technologies to make such discoveries.
The initiative is “guided by the conviction that we must shine a light on both fundamental discoveries and innovative technologies, areas that are often overlooked by existing funding frameworks,” the call text says.
In line with the foundation’s broader vision, the call emphasises international collaboration. While this is not a requirement, the funder will look favourably on projects that bring together organisations from multiple countries, especially developing countries. Having a Japanese institution on…
