The EU will spend €605.45 million to support EU-Africa cooperation in research and innovation in the next two years in areas such as health, agriculture, democracy and raw materials. This will be the fourth and final iteration of the Africa Initiative under Horizon Europe, aimed at boosting collaboration and strengthening African research and innovation systems.
With this final instalment, the EU will have spent €1.7 billion on projects designed to include African researchers. The initiative’s budget peaked in 2025 with €500.5 million for just one year, while the two previous editions ran for two years each, investing €650 million over four years.
The EU and the African Union first started cooperating on research and innovation policy in 2010. Ten years later, in 2020, solidifying the cooperation, they announced four priority areas for cooperation: innovation and technology, the green transition, public health, and capacities for science and higher education.
