A first assessment of the African Union-EU Innovation Agenda agreed in 2023 shows a few small signs of deepening ties between the two blocs. For the most part, however, it is too soon to say if the agenda is having any effect.
The joint innovation agenda between the African Union (AU) and EU was unveiled in July 2023 as part of a wider push by Brussels to offer an alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Africa. Conceived as a decade-long process, this first assessment carried out for the European Commission covers just the first year.
