Italian, Greek and Swiss universities punch above their weight in EU-backed innovation

Universities around Europe have participated in almost 1,000 Horizon Europe innovation projects, with universities in Italy taking the lead.
Yet the most successful individual institutions, by number of total participations, are three technical universities from elsewhere in Europe: Technical University of Denmark, National Technical University of Athens and Delft University of Technology. Each has participated in projects more than 40 times, drawing in €120 million in funding.
But the top three represent only a small chunk of the total funding for universities in Horizon Europe innovation projects, which totals €1.46 billion across 968 projects involving 830 universities.
