Norway is currently Horizon Europe’s top associated country, according to the amount of money received from the EU research programme. But with the UK and Switzerland both returning to the EU research programme, this leadership position will soon be challenged.
The UK and Switzerland have historically done well in EU research. But both were barred from associating to Horizon Europe for years while their governments stabilised their relationships with the EU.
After three years, the UK officially rejoined the EU research programme last year and has been making its way back up to the leader board ever since.
Switzerland has remained active despite not being able to receive money from the programme. It will be the wild card this year, set to officially join Horizon Europe in November after years of painful stalemate.
