Survey sheds light on public views of regulation, research security, who benefits from new technology and conspiratorial beliefs about science

Europeans have widely divergent views on whether the private sector should be free to exploit new science and technology, or if the government should take firm control, according to a major survey of public attitudes.
In Portugal, nearly eight in ten people think science and technology should be “tightly regulated” by the government. In Finland, by contrast, just one in four thinks the same.
This is just one of the insights in a survey of European attitudes to science and technology, commissioned by the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Directorate General and released in February this year.
It surveyed more than 34,000 people in EU member states, and neighbours like the UK and Turkey, in September and October last year. …
