India’s new AI strategy and governance guidelines try to balance regulation and growth, tech sovereignty and collaboration with Europe

The Indian government released a strategy to bolster the country’s emerging artificial intelligence sector in November, together with detailed guidelines for AI governance.
“We have come out with a framework [where] I think we have balanced nimble regulation with innovation,” said Ajay Kumar Sood, India’s principal scientific advisor, in an interview with Science|Business.
Sood led the advisory group that drafted the guidelines, which he said try to walk a line between having responsible regulations and allowing new AI innovations to thrive in the country.
