Napier University in Edinburgh is launching the Biofuel Research Centre, the first of its kind in the UK, to find sustainable alternatives to energy based on fossil fuels.

The centre, to be led by Martin Tangney, will research and develop second-generation biofuels from a diverse range of non-food crops and waste matter.

As an expert in the biological production of butanol, Tangney secured £500,000 in research funding to study biofuels. He is establishing the centre to act as a portal between industry, government, academia and the public, to give accurate and consistent messages across all relevant parties.
