Scientists of the University of Granada, Spain, have developed a new optical technique for detecting if a compact disc or digital video disc is an original or a bootlegged copy. They say the technique is economic, fast and effective.

Original CDs are printed using a process which is profitable for large print runs, while copies are made by making a series of marks on the surface through ‘burning’ with lasers The new technique makes it possible to identify CDs that have been reproduced using industrial processes and those burnt with lasers, using light diffraction.
