ETH Zürich is to create a new professorship in medical technology, following the donation of CHF 10 million (€6.6 million) to the ETH Zürich Foundation.

The professorship, to develop orthopaedic technologies, will work closely with the research group at the Schulthess Clinic in Zurich.

In addition to the CHF 10 million which will fund the professorship for ten years, a further CHF 1 million (€659,000) will be invested in expanding the research group at the Schulthess Clinic.

The new chair, “Orthopaedic technology for ageing”, is expected to be advertised in the late autumn of 2009.

In its “Medical technology and health” initiative announced in 2008, ETH Zürich stated that medical technology would be one of its key research areas. The new professorship is a significant part of the strategy.
