Funding opportunity

The UK Health Innovation Challenge Fund, a parallel funding partnership between the Wellcome Trust and the Department of Health, is calling for proposals that take into practical healthcare application the understanding of genetic variation on disease.

International efforts such as the Human and Cancer Genome Projects, HapMap, Case Control and SNP Consortia have generated new understanding in human genetics, which the Health Innovation Challenge Fund aims to transfer into clinical application.

The fund will support work that accelerates the development of innovative technologies, into new products, technologies and interventions and approaches for patient benefit.

UK institutions, eligible companies and NHS Trusts are invited to submit preliminary applications in areas including, diagnostic genetics; pharmacogenomic tests; point-of-care tests and treatment technologies; medical devices for hospital-based or out-patient use; technologies to facilitate home-based disease monitoring, management or treatment and health informatics.

The proposed outputs from any proposals should be no longer than five years from market introduction and availability to health services.

Preliminary applications should be submitted by 2nd October 2009. Full applications, if invited, will be required by 14th December 2009. Decisions will be made in February 2010.
