Chalmers Innovation Seed Fund is to invest SEK 850 000 (€87,000) in its spin-out company Orthocone, for the further development of a new type of liquid-crystal display that can provide significantly higher performance, while being more environmentally friendly and easier to produce.
The technology is based on over 20 years of research at Chalmers. Anders Bohman, CEO of Orthocone, says, “Our new, advanced materials meet the requirements of the market for better picture quality, more environmentally friendly and energy efficient displays and simpler and cheaper production.”
Orthocone will now offer manufacturers of screens in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan licensing development options. “Our goal is within three years to license our technology to the leading players in the displays,” says Bohman.
“We choose to focus on Orthocone because they have a unique display technology that is applicable across many areas, both short and long term,” says Timo Lehes, Investment Manager of Chalmers Innovation Seed Fund.
Orthocone was founded by Sven Torbjörn Lagerwall, Per Rudquist, Pontus Jägemalm and Chalmers Innovation in July 2009 as a spin-out from the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience. The company is developing a patented liquid crystal technology called Orthoconic AntiFerroelectric Liquid Crystals.
