When Denmark assumes the presidency of the Council of the EU in July, the official opening will take place in Aarhus University’s Main Hall. The College of Commissioners and the Danish government will participate. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Danish Prime Minister will then hold a joint press conference.

This is the first time Aarhus University will host such a major European Union political summit.

“We ourselves think our campus is something special, and it’s a pleasure to be able to share its beauty with top-level European political leaders and the public,” says Brian Bech Nielsen, rector of Aarhus University.

According to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Denmark is assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU at a crucial juncture in the history of Europe:

“This is a major opportunity for a small country like ours to make a political impact and lead the drive for a stronger Europe. And we’re prepared to take on that responsibility.”

After the official opening at Aarhus University, the delegation will visit the art museum ARoS, where their Royal Highnesses the King and Queen of Denmark will meet with the president of the European Commission and the Danish prime minister. The delegation will also visit the Port of Aarhus, with a focus on sustainability. The programme will conclude with an opening ceremony at Aarhus City Hall – with speeches, music and the participation of the royal couple.

At the same time, the public will be invited to a European street party in the City Hall Park, with concerts, debates and social dining.

The opening of the Presidency of the Council of the EU at the Main Hall will impact traffic conditions and building access for employees at the university on 2 and 3 June.
