US university hopes for better access to European funding, building on existing joint programmes with France

The University of Chicago has nearly tripled the size of its Paris campus, adding a new research institute. It hopes to access more European funding as a result.
Despite the rise of China as a scientific power and Europe’s declining share of global academic papers, the university’s top international collaborators remain European.
“We decided to [. . .] expand because of the increase in collaboration with European partners,” said Ka Yee Christina Lee, Chicago’s executive vice president for strategic initiatives. “It’s very exciting.”
