Across successive EU Framework Programmes, the social sciences and humanities have gained greater visibility and support. Budget allocations have increased, and there is stronger project inclusion, and growing investment in research infrastructures.
Under Horizon 2020, the disciplines were established as a cross-cutting priority across the programme, marking an important step away from treating them as stand-alone domains.
With Horizon Europe, integration of the social sciences and humanities has deepened further. They are now embedded in research addressing major societal challenges and supported through a cluster dedicated to culture, creativity and inclusive society, which has a budget of around €2.3 billion.
