Country dominates competition for research and innovation funding backing key “twin transition” policy

Spain is a clear leader when it comes to research and innovation supporting the EU’s green and digital transitions, securing more than 17% of the funding available in Horizon Europe.
Since 2021, Horizon Europe has invested €1.44 billion in 186 projects relating to the green and digital transitions, involving more than 3,000 organisations. These numbers will keep growing in the coming months as the Commission evaluates the 2025 batch of “twin transition” projects.
Spain’s share of the pie includes €253 million in funding across 542 participations in 147 projects. That’s almost a fifth of the entire funding pot, surpassing its performance across the whole of Horizon Europe, where it comes third in terms of funding, securing 10% of the total, and third in participations, with 11% of the total.
