Funding won lags participation as Italian researchers take a back seat in projects, Italian agency says

Five years into Horizon Europe, Italy remains a highly active participant but struggles to bring home as much money as its European neighbours, the Italian Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE) has found.
These figures highlight “a structural gap between the critical mass of participation and the average value of funding obtained,” APRE says in a commentary on a new report. “In other words, Italy is strongly present in the programme but still tends to translate this presence into projects that are, on average, less financially substantial than those of leading countries.”
