Gender equality research agenda is driven by the scientific community, not top-down policy

Gender equality is a cross-cutting policy priority in Horizon Europe, with the gender dimension integrated in funding rules, research content and proposal evaluation. But when it comes to projects related to gender equality, the initiative comes from researchers themselves.
According to European Commission data, the EU has invested €79.3 million in 55 gender equality-related research and innovation projects since the start of Horizon Europe in 2021. These projects, tagged “gender equality” on the Horizon Europe dashboard, involve almost 350 organisations.
More than half of the projects, 41 in total, were funded through bottom-up programmes that allow applicants to choose their own topic of research, rather than following top-down research priorities.
