Last November, Japan began negotiations to join Horizon Europe. If successful, it would mark the first time the country has been fully associated with an EU research Framework Programme.
Japan has a longstanding history of R&D collaboration with the EU, dating back to a scientific and technological cooperation agreement that was signed in 2009. Building on this foundation, the European Commission and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science signed an agreement in May 2015 to facilitate access to research opportunities in Europe for Japanese researchers. This was followed by agreements with the Japan Science and Technology Agency and with the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).
