Canadian firm Eavor has built a ground-source heat pump for an entire Bavarian city with the aid of €91.6 million in grants

In Geretsried, a town just south of Munich, an innovative form of electricity generation came online last December. After years of pilot projects and fundraising, a Canadian company called Eavor announced its “closed loop” geothermal plant was finally delivering electricity into the German grid.
But in the longer term, the hope is that water flowing through looping pipes drilled kilometres into the warm ground could heat and power cities, without needing seams of hot rock or the risk of earthquake-inducing fracking underground.
While the Geretsried plant is a technological achievement, it’s also a financial one. Eavor had to cobble together an enormous array of private and public grants and loans to get the project off the ground, including from multiple EU sources.
