On October 28, research Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva promised to embed research security in EU law. In doing so, she and her staff will have plenty of policy initiatives to build on.
According to the latest STIP Compass, a joint project by the European Commission and the OECD for monitoring science, technology and innovation policies, there are 250 research security policies currently being run by governments and research funders across 41 countries.
Research security policies work to prevent foreign interference, manage risks and ensure trust in science. They are usually part of, and at times overlap with, broader research integrity policy frameworks, which are tracked separately by the STIP Compass.
