Funding for flagships grows as the Circular Bio-based Europe joint undertaking reduces its annual budget to €165 million

The Circular Bio-based Europe joint undertaking (CBE JU) will put €76 million into four flagship biorefineries in 2025, accounting for nearly half of its €165 million annual budget. This represents an increase in funding for such projects, while the total call budget has fallen dramatically from the €213 million released in 2024.
This budget reduction is not a cut, however. Since setting up the joint undertaking took longer than anticipated, the CBE JU decided to hold over calls that would have taken place in 2021. These funds were then added to calls over the next three years. “Now we go back to the normal way of doing things, if you will,” said programme officer Dieter Brigitta.
