routeRANK, a runner-up in the ScienceBusiness ACES awards, has announced that its Chairman Jochen Mundinger has been recognised by MIT Technology Review magazine as one of the world’s top innovators under the age of 35. The selection is in recognition of the development of routeRANK’s travel planning technology.

Mundinger was selected from amongst more than 300 nominees by a panel of expert judges and the editorial staff of Technology Review.

Unlike other applications that consider only one means of transport at a time, routeRANK weighs up the entire route, by integrating rail, road and air connections. In a single search, routeRANK’s technology finds and ranks the best possible travel routes, allowing users to sort them according to priorities such as price, travel time and CO2 emissions.

routeRANK and the other winners for 2010 will be featured in the September/October issue of Technology Review and online at http://www.technologyreview.com/tr35/. In addition, the EmTech@MIT 2010 Conference, to be held September 21–23 at MIT, will honour the winners at an awards ceremony and in a series of presentations.

“routeRANK and its team is proud to have its technology recognised by such a prestigious institution,” said Jochen Mundinger. “After previous awards in Europe, this further illustrates the worldwide relevance of our product.”

routeRANK Ltd is based in the science park of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne. Customised versions of its software are offered to corporate customers and organisations, for internal use in both travel and logistics. Examples include the Travel Helper, developed for the World Wide Fund for Nature and the Nokia Green Explorer. The Swiss government has recently become a customer.
