Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski
Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, Bulgaria’s first higher education institution, was founded in 1888, continuing the nation’s long educational tradition.
Plans for a Bulgarian university appeared in 1880, and in 1888 a Pedagogy Class in Sofia was transformed into a Higher School.
Initially consisting of a History and Philology department, it expanded with Physics and Mathematics (1889/1890) and Law (1892). In 1894 it became the Bulgarian University “Brothers Evlogiy and Hristo Georgievs.” Between 1918 and 1923, faculties of Medicine, Agronomy and Forestry, Theology, and Veterinary Medicine were added. By 1938, the University had seven faculties and had established itself as a leading scientific center in the Balkans.
Despite post-1947 restructuring, Sofia University remained Bulgaria’s premier academic institution. Today it has 16 faculties, a branch in Burgas, and 127 degree programs. Its University Library, founded in 1900, is Bulgaria’s largest scientific library, holding over 2.5 million items.
Named after St. Kliment Ohridski since 1935, the University celebrates both its patron’s feast day and 8 December, the Day of Bulgarian University Students. It is recognized as Bulgaria’s largest and most prestigious scientific hub, maintaining partnerships with more than 80 universities worldwide and leading the country in Erasmus mobility participation.
