Munster Technological University
Munster Technological University (MTU) is a multi-campus Irish university with six campuses serving approximately 13,500 students and more than 1,000 international students from over 125 countries. Guided by the mission of delivering “Research to Impact,” MTU’s research community advances high-quality, interdisciplinary research with societal, environmental, and economic impact.
MTU’s research is structured around five thematic pillars: Life Sciences & Wellbeing; Physical & Engineering Sciences; Information & Communication Technologies; Business, Entrepreneurship & Social Sciences; and Creative & Performing Arts, Humanities & Media. Together, these reflect the university’s strengths in addressing global challenges in health, sustainability, digital transformation, and culture, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and European research priorities.
MTU’s research ecosystem comprises 13 research centres and groups spanning areas of established national and international expertise. These include Nimbus (Cyber-Physical Systems and IoT), CAPPA (Photonics and Process Analysis), IMaR (Mechatronics and Robotics), CABR (Applied Biosciences), the Halpin Centre for Research & Innovation (Maritime and the Blue Economy), and the Clean Technology Centre (CTC), recognised nationally for leadership in sustainability and resource efficiency. Together, these centres drive interdisciplinary collaboration across science, engineering, technology, the humanities, and the arts.
MTU places strong emphasis on researcher development and talent cultivation. The university supports structured PhD training, early-career researcher mentoring, and participation in Marie Skłodowska-Curie and other mobility schemes. MTU holds both the HR Excellence in Research (HRS4R) and Athena Swan Bronze awards, underscoring its commitment to research integrity, equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Internationalisation and collaboration are central to MTU’s vision. As a founding member of the INGENIUM European University Alliance, MTU works alongside nine partner universities to develop joint research initiatives, doctoral training, and mobility schemes that enhance its global engagement. The alliance strengthens MTU’s capacity to address transnational challenges and to integrate education, research, and innovation across Europe.
