IFLA – International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions

IFLA is the global organisation for libraries, bringing together libraries of all types around the world since 1927. It both provides space for exchange, learning and standards development within the library and information science field, and defends and promotes the interests of libraries and their users internationally.

IFLA is first and foremost a space and structure for library and information workers across Europe and around the world to meet, share ideas and experience, and develop insights and standards that can support the development of effective and inclusive library services. As such, we also serve to a significant extent as a form of scientific union for the Library and Information Science sector.

A core part of our membership is the academic and research library community. In addition to a general Section (volunteer committee with broader registered membership), we have dedicated groups looking at Social Sciences, Health and Biosciences, Science and Technology, Audiovisual and Multimedia, News and Media, Acquisitions and Collections, Serials and other Continuing Resources and more. We also have Advisory Committees focused on Open Science and Scholarship, Copyright and other Legal Matters, Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression and more.

Outputs from this work include policy and professional statements, professional reports, analytical reports, less formal blogs and articles, and events.

Beyond our work as a professional space, we also engage with partners and other stakeholders both in order to make the case for laws and legal frameworks that best enable libraries to support their communities, as well as for libraries to be engaged and mobilised in a broad range of initiatives.

To this end, we have a policy and advocacy team which engages around the United Nations (including in its work around science), UNESCO, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the UNFCCC, UN Habitat and more. We are the lead organisation administering the Knowledge Rights 21 programme, which works to ensure that the needs of researchers, educators, learners and readers, as well as the libraries that support them, are heard when discussions are taking place around information and knowledge regulation.

Finally, we are active in project delivery work, drawing on the expertise of our volunteer community and the very strong geographical reach of our membership in order to deliver on wider policy goals. We are engaged, for example, in work around supporting knowledge valorisation, media and information literacy, heritage promotion and more, as well as initiatives focused on building the capacity of libraries to realise their potential in their host institutions and communities.
