EREA - Association of European Research Establishments in Aeronautics

Founded in 1994, EREA is a non-profit organisation whose members are Europe’s most outstanding research centres in the field of aeronautics and air transport, pioneering an innovative, climate-neutral and competitive air transport system for future generations.

The Association of European Research Establishments in Aeronautics (EREA) was established in 1994 to tackle the European-level challenges that national research organisations in the field were beginning to face. In the past three decades, the European aviation industry has gone through an extensive process of integration. At the same time, the air transport sector has undergone integration into multinational mega-carriers, while regulation is now a European responsibility and closer European cooperation is also being established in the area of security and defence. All of these developments have shaped the current environment for EREA’s members and its strategic technology roadmaps .

Through its mission and activities, EREA is an organisation that strives to make the knowledge triangle complete. Its centres and groups of experts take up fundamental research from universities and develop these results between TRL 3-6, delivering technology that can ultimately be converted into market-ready products for industrial application. Moreover, EREA provides to Europe unique experimental facilities, including wind tunnels, flight test capabilities, air traffic management simulators, propulsion test rigs, acoustics chambers, and structures and materials test capabilities.

Over its thirty-year history, EREA has compiled an extensive track record of pan-European cooperation – both among its membership and together with industry – in support of EU Visions and related strategic research and innovation agendas, including the European Vision 2020 for Aeronautics and Air Transport (published 2001), the Flightpath 2050 Vision for Aviation (published 2011) and the recent Fly the Green Deal Vision for Aviation (published 2022). In that context, EREA members have been longstanding contributors to various EU research framework programmes, and in particular the Clean Sky and SESAR Joint Undertakings.
