These updates are republished press releases and communications from members of the Science|Business Network

  • Launch of a European Hydrogen Regions Initiative to accelerate pathways to a low carbon energy future
  • Commitment to scalable, real-world solutions delivering climate, economic, and societal impact
  • Focus on integrated hydrogen ecosystems, connecting production, distribution, and mobility use
  • Appointment of Spilett GmbH to support the selection and regional engagement Open call for European regions and stakeholders now live to identify candidate Hydrogen Regions

The initiative represents a new step in Toyota Mobility Foundation commitment to supporting the development of sustainable, low-carbon, and inclusive mobility and energy ecosystems across Europe, with hydrogen playing a key role in enabling the energy transition.

Through the initiative, TMF will provide targeted support to promising European regions that have already begun developing regional hydrogen ecosystems but are currently facing challenges creating a sustainable energy system.

The initiative will focus on regions with strong potential to succeed once these barriers are overcome, helping them become self-sustaining without the need for ongoing support. Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate significant local impact and offer strong potential for replication in other regions, thereby accelerating the development of resilient and scalable hydrogen ecosystems across Europe.

Supporting the development of Hydrogen Regions in Europe

The initiative will focus on identifying and supporting up to 5 European regions with strong potential to develop local Hydrogen Ecosystems that are integrated into the existing infrastructures and processes.

Through this work, TMF aims to contribute to the development of scalable, real-world solutions that support Europe’s energy transition toward a sustainable and resilient future.

A collaborative, region-driven approach

The initiative is designed as a collaborative process, working closely with:

  • Regional and local authorities
  • Industry stakeholders
  • Mobility operators
  • Civil society and academia

Selected regions will benefit from structured assessment, technical support, and ecosystem development guidance, helping to build viable and integrated hydrogen value chains.

Role of Spilett GmbH.

Spilett GmbH has been appointed by the TMF to support the implementation of the initiative. This builds on a strong track record of previous collaboration between TMF and Spilett GmbH in hydrogen ecosystem development, including work involving tools such as H2Scout, which enable data-driven planning and optimisation of hydrogen value chains.

In this role, Spilett GmbH will support TMF by:

  • Identifying and assessing candidate regions
  • Supporting a transparent and structured selection process
  • Contributing to the design of integrated hydrogen ecosystems
  • Engaging regional stakeholders and strengthening connections within the European hydrogen ecosystem

This continued collaboration reflects a TMF commitment to developing scalable, human-driven solutions that deliver both environmental impact and long-term regional value.

Call for applications now open

TMF invites regions, cities, and stakeholders across Europe to express their interest in participating in the first phase of the initiative.

Applications are open until 31st of July 2026 at: https://www.h2regions.eu/TMF
