University of Bologna has elected structural engineer Francesco Ubertini as new rector

Professor of structural engineering Francesco Ubertini has been elected new rector of the University of Bologna. He will hold the position until 2021. 

Ubertini holds a PhD in structural mechanics, and since 2007 he is professor of structural engineering at the University. Since 2010, he has been leading the university’s department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM), and has been a member of the academic Senate.

His research interests focus on various aspects of structural mechanics, but he has also made theoretical and applied contributions in many fields of Engineering.

The main themes covered by Ubertini’s research are numerical modelling and structural analysis, intelligent structures and innovative materials, historical and archaeological structures, structural monitoring and diagnostics.

He is a member of the editorial committees of a number of international journals, and he is an expert auditor for the Italian minister of education and research.

Ubertini also coordinates a large research group that is very active internationally and is the scientific manager of research projects contracted by national and multinational companies.
