Science|Business seeks a Brussels-based Editor

10 Dec 2021 | Jobs

Science|Business, a Brussels-based media company focused on R&D policy and investment, is looking for an Editor to lead our daily European news coverage, and to speed growth in audience and revenue.

Since its start in 2005, our online news service has earned a reputation as the best, independent eye on EU R&D policies and programmes; and its many events, online and in-person, are the premiere gathering places for anyone trying to understand and connect with those programmes. At the same time, our expert news coverage of policy for AI and quantum, climate and energy, health and COVID have boosted readership in Europe and beyond.

Now, as we chart our course for the future, we are looking for an editorial entrepreneur with the energy and judgement to lead our small news team in Europe and develop new, profitable news products. This individual would work on editorial strategy with the founding Editorial Director, and on revenue generation with the CEO. This person would also lead, supervise and contribute to our online news of European R&D policy and investment.

This is a rare opportunity for an ambitious, skilled journalist with the vision to lead, the experience to act, and the ambition to create something new.

-Management of full-time journalists and freelance contributors in Europe

-Daily supervision of global news production and quality, on the Web and in our newsletters

-Contribute to development of news strategy and products to expand revenue and audience

-Reporting and writing news or features, depending on news flow

-Representation of the company in public events, as moderator or speaker

-Consulting to the CEO on sponsored, member or other content as required

-At least 7 years of professional journalistic experience, including expertise in at least one of our main themes: science & technology, R&D policy & investment, and EU affairs

-Based in Brussels, or willing and able to move and work there soon

-Native-level English fluency, written and spoken

-Independent contract

-News management or product-development experience preferred

Compensation commensurate with experience, and could include share options in the company. This is an opportunity to help lead our company through its next stage, and pioneer how a news organisation can best serve the fast-growing, and vitally important, global science enterprise.
